"Obi Wanted Red Bull" wins Red Bull Flugtag Trinidad 2011

An estimated 40,000 spectators converged on William’s Bay Chaguaramas for the first Red Bull Flugtag held in the Caribbean and witnessed team Obi Wanted Red Bull claim victory with their hilarious combination of showmanship, creativity and flight distance.

“The day was excellent; the weather, the people and the whole vibe of the competition was great” said the excited pilot of the winning team, Ryun Singh. “We are so ready for Panama. The force was with us!”

Team "Obi Wanted Red Bull "
Wendy Fitzwilliam, former Miss Universe and local media personalities were among the celebrity judges that got an upfront view of the home-made flying machines that jetted off the 22 foot ramp. “It was incredible to see the creativity of the participants as well as the massive spectator turnout for this competition. Although we didn’t break the world record, it was a day of good clean fun,” shared Latoya Woods, one of the judges and former Miss T&T Universe.

RED 967FM radio talk show hosts JW & Blaze kept the overflowing crowd roaring with laughter while dozens of boats , kayaks and yatchs, crowded the bay and enjoyed the best view of the event. A collective breath was held when the winner’s craft flew off the ramp for an outstanding 52 feet, the longest flight of the day.

Obi Wanted Red Bull won their ticket to Travis Pastrana’s playground, Nitro City Hotel in Panama, with 142.5 points. Coming in second and jetting off to Barbados for an ultimate kite boarding experience is team Tattoo Inc Flight Club with a combined score of 117. Team Emancipation could use their airplane craft to fly over to Tobago for a weekend of extreme fun, and also walked away with the People’s Choice title with an astounding 46,510 votes, keeping their wings on with a year’s supply of Red Bull.

Spectators got an early start to secure the best views, flocking the beach since 5 am. According to the Office of Disaster Preparedness Management (ODPM), over one third of the island’s population mobilized to the west end of Trinidad in an attempt to view firsthand “flying horses”, “a box full of piggies” and even a “flying barra” leap into Chaguaramas waters.

Thousands of people in thousands of vehicles caused a massive traffic jam yesterday along the Western Main Road and as far back as the Beetham Highway as they headed for the inaugural Red Bull Flugtag at Williams Bay, Chaguaramas. But not even traffic can stop Trinis from having a good time.

Red Bull Flugtag has circled the world since 1991, and now Trinidad joins the long list of iconic countries such as Ireland, Hong Kong and Australia that have witnessed the hilarious human-powered flights.

Machel Montano to perform at White House for President Obama

US President Barack Obama has declared June 2011 as National Caribbean American Heritage Month. In the form of a Proclamation dated JUNE 2011, the Obama administration has recognized the integration of Caribbean nationals into the American society while still maintaining their cultural identity.

In an excerpt from the Proclamation, the Obama Administration states, “The fabric of our Nation has been woven together and enriched by the diversity of our people. Our legacy as a Nation of immigrants is part of what makes America strong, and during National Caribbean American Heritage Month, we celebrate the rich history and vibrant culture Caribbean Americans have brought to our shores.”
Undoubtedly, this declaration has given Caribbean nationals worldwide more reason to proudly celebrate their heritage especially since Montano will be the first soca artist to perform for the US President. As part of this celebration, King of Soca, Machel Montano, son of Trinidad and Tobago and renowned Caribbean Recording and Performing Artiste who is also well loved as an ambassador of Caribbean Culture in North America has been carded to perform at the White House on June 24th, 2011 from 11.00 am - 12.30 pm.
Click here to enjoy his latest single.

Update 29/6/11: Not certain if the performance ever occurred since there was no follow-up from any media sources or Machel Montano and his management. Additionally, there are no indications of the event or references to any performances on the official White House President's Schedule.

Jamaican Beauty Gets Good Vibration From T&T's Shurwayne Winchester

Port-of-Spain, Trinidad. June 7, 2011 - It’s a case of boy meets girl and sparks fly, but not in the literal sense. Trinidad and Tobago has once again fused musically, with a Caribbean counterpart, creating a track that many are agreeing, will cause a stir in the region and internationally this summer.
Brand new to the music arena is a 23-year-old songstress who goes by the name, Keida. It’s short for Makeida Beckford and for the past two years this Caribbean beauty has been studying the craft, learning from the elders of the industry and meeting some of the most influential people in the business

For Keida, this is a second hit single. The collaboration comes on the heels of a track she did called, Jamaican Boy.

According to Shurwayne, the opportunity to collaborate with the budding Caribbean songstress just couldn’t be missed. “ This girl is amazing. She can really sing. It was really a pleasure working with her and I’m looking forward to doing more tracks with her,” he said.

Good Vibration is not a Soca track. It’s a fusion of reggae, dancehall and groovy soca and offers lyrics that fuel true Caribbean appreciation. Listen Below!
