Describing the single as “mad,” Bunji said his soul had been craving the ragga-soca sub-genre and admitted that he’d had enough of trying to prove himself to everyone. “I just plain tired of trying to prove myself to this one, and that one because they have a concept of how this should be and how that should be, and I tried too many times to fit that mould. “And when you try to do it they still don’t want to forget the past because they already pre-conceptualise in their minds what they think you should represent or what you represent. I doing what I have to do now,” said the lyrical entertainer.
Having recently released a single called Shawty alongside Imij and Company’s, Ricardo Drue, the solo track comes at a time when fans of the artiste are craving his musical penetration. Irregular sits steadily on the Popso riddim, which was produced in Barbados by King Bubba of Platta Studios. Bunji joins Lil Rick, Skinny Fabulous, Busy Signal and Problem Child on the riddim and already soca fanatics are expressing a liking for Bunji’s hardcore ragga-soca chant. Admitting that his original style had changed over the years, the man known to many for his fiery utterances said he felt he now truly understood his purpose in the industry. “I was always designed to stand out. Fitting in was always a problem for me. For some reason I was given this mantle to carry, this other branch of soca ‘cause it is a tree. “Calypso, soca, ragga-soca. There was hip-hop-soca some time ago but ragga -soca has always been around as a sub genre. We can’t abandon what has been put forth on the table. Somebody has to mould it, to regularise it,” he said.
Bunji said he wanted to take his place, along with other artistes of that sub-genre, since he understood it well and wanted to develop it to the point where other artistes could be inspired to represent it at any forum. “I want to change it up so that people who come across it and sing it won’t feel penalised or stigmatised by it,” he said. On the alter ego that he calls I-Spaniard, Bunji explained. “When you see me you’re looking at I the Spaniard. Instead of saying that, I simply said I-Spaniard. It’s an ID for myself.” Still a big “tweeter” on the online circuit, fans of the artiste can certainly keep a tab on his utterances by checking him out on Twitter. In addition they can listen out for his new track, Irregular at radio stations in the days ahead.
